This year I have had the wonderful opportunity of exploring the idea of the body being as symbol of text. With this notion one moves away from the polarised relationship between the body and mind but instead these two are brought closer and work to reveal the natural and instincual text of the body. The use of the body as an organic shape that within itself performs between time and space.
An amazing SA performer, Mamela Nyamza who advocates for this kind of thinking and uses a combination of dancing styles and inspiration from everyday life as a reference point in her works. I have a slight crush on her talent.
Her one woman show, Hatched (performed at the National Arts Fest) in 2010, explores her autobiography through movement, its beautiful, honest and most importantly so wonderfully South African. Enjoy:)
